When to Schedule Your Senior Photos

When Should You Schedule Your Senior Photos?

One of the most common questions I get from juniors and seniors is: “When should I schedule my senior photos?”

The short answer? Earlier than you think.

Planning ahead gives you more flexibility, better lighting, and more options when it comes to season, locations, and availability. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the best time for your senior session.

Start Thinking About Senior Photos During Junior Year

Believe it or not, the best time to start planning your senior photos is the middle to end of your junior year. Most senior sessions take place between spring of junior year and fall of senior year, and photographers often book out at LEAST a couple of months in advance.

Once you know:

• the photographer you want

• the season or vibe you’re going for

…it’s time to get on the schedule. Waiting too long can mean missing out on your ideal month or your preferred photographer.

Spring of Junior Year = Flowers & Greenery

If you’re dreaming of flowers, blooming trees, and lush green backdrops, spring of your junior year is the time to book.

April, May, and June offer:

• more floral options

• brighter greens

• longer evenings and later sunsets

So many seniors miss out on this look simply because they don’t start thinking about senior photos until the flowers are already gone. If this is your dream aesthetic, plan early—you’ll thank yourself later.

Summer is a Popular (and Smart) Choice

Many seniors choose to schedule their session during the summer before senior year, and for good reason.

Summer sessions work well because:

• school isn’t in session

• sports and extracurriculars are often lighter

• schedules are more flexible

But beyond convenience, summer is incredibly beautiful for senior photos. Think warm sunshine, golden grass, glowing sunsets, and beautiful creeks and rivers.

If you love the idea of barefoot creek photos, sunlit fields, or that golden-hour glow, summer might be the perfect season for your senior session.

Fall Sessions & Scheduling Around School

Fall is one of the most popular and highly requested seasons for senior photos—partially because of its beauty, and also because many seniors who haven’t thought about their senior portraits yet are suddenly panicking. October, in particular, is a favorite for all session types, not just seniors, thanks to beautiful autumn colors, cool and comfortable temperatures, and that cozy, timeless feel.

That popularity does come with some scheduling considerations, especially for outdoor sessions.

I typically start sessions 1–2 hours before sunset to capture the best light. In fall and winter, sunsets happen much earlier, meaning sessions may start as early as 2–3pm. You’ll also need time beforehand to get ready.

If leaving school early isn’t an option, you’ll want to:

    •    schedule far enough in advance to secure a weekend date, or

    •    consider an earlier month with later sunsets

Planning ahead is key for fall sessions—especially if October is your dream month.

Final Thoughts

Every senior’s schedule and vision is different, but the key takeaway is this: the earlier you plan, the more options you’ll have. From seasons and lighting to availability and stress levels, giving yourself time leads to the best experience—and the best photos.
